The Nautical Fashion Trend is one which makes an appearance almost every Spring!
Spring 2011 sees stripes with an unsurprising nautical dominance once again. The fashion trend appeared on both the resort & cruise runways as well as the spring 2011 runways in New York, Paris and Milan.
The nautical trend encompasses the traditional horizontal stripes as well as sailor looks such as white caps and boating jackets.
Although the nautical trend had a bit more heft in 2010, it is still an extremely relevant fashion trend; which features classic pieces such as the horizontal navy and white striped shirt.
2010 was all about Military Fashion, focusing mainly on Army & Air Force style, meaning the Navy pieces hardy got noticed. Since the military trend, in general, is winding down it leaves room for nautically inclined apparel pieces. Don’t think of this trend as strictly a nautical military trend, rather it’s the classic navy and white color palette, worn as dominant stripes.

While navy and white stripes are a must for this Classic Nautical trend (though black and white works too), the real key to this year’s take on nautical stripes is that they dominate the outfit. Stripes can dominate an outfit in everything from hats to killer mini-dresses this year.
The return of bell bottoms, a style which originated with the sailor pants of the US Navy, represent the perfect opportunity for creating nautical ensembles. And of course a striped top with flares is a combination that also lends itself to a perfectly “70’s inspired” look.

While this year’s navy and white striped fashion trend isn’t a true take on navy inspired fashion, it’s likely to appeal to those who are into the nautical aesthetic. If you’re after some inspiration look to Anja Rubik’s sailor photo shoot from the June 2010 issue of Vogue Korea.
These Chanel stripes take on an adorable Parisienne look and we love it ~ thank you Coco! Our friends at Daily Vitamin Sea shared a lovely article about Coco Chanel and the French Sailor Shirt last year.
We also fell in love with this lovely Armani outfit which was shot for Vogue Korea. There is just something about being dressed to the ‘nines’ for a sailboat ride!
