• {Travel & Leisure} Salt Water Taffy in Bodega Bay

A favorite childhood memory is driving from our Northern California home in Napa to Bodega Bay…the place made famous by Alfred Hitchcock and the movie, The Birds.

Besides the fun we had playing along the sandy shores, we always (I mean ALWAYS) stopped at Patrick’s Salt Water Taffy on our way out of town on Highway 1.

The tiny business was directly off the main highway and if you blinked you might of missed the pink and white striped shack. Parking was on the side of the road in the dirt. Even as a child, I found the chippy paint and tiny wood building, well, simply charming.

When visiting the area a few years ago we made a special trip to see if Patrick’s was still around after all these years…it sure was! Of course, the tiny shack is now a bigger store with a parking lot. In addition to the huge assortment of salt water taffy they now offer ‘beachy’ tourist gifts.

It was nice being able to take Liz to this place of my childhood memories; but the best part was that they kept the old building! Yes, the old original building was still there – they attached the new structure to it. Liz didn’t understand my joy at seeing the old pink and white stripes which were still…charming :O)

The walk-up window I remember visiting with my mom as a child.
Pink & white stripes are soooooo charming!
