Daisies in the Cottage Library

An Unused Room Becomes A Cottage Library

It’s funny how I still feel uneasy sharing photos of our simple cottage home with you after two years of blogging.  There is so much talent that I see everyday throughout the blogosphere that it’s a bit disheartening sometimes when I look at my home. Well, I’m going to bite the bullet and still show you my newest room re-do, even though it is far from complete.

{Oh, I totally forgot to tell you that my camera broke and I almost cried. I bought it new in 2002 so it’s been around for a few years. David is letting me use his little Canon digital that I’m trying to learn…bare with me LOL!}

Our home is set up so that you walk directly into our living room from the front door…well, if you come through the front door, which no one ever does.  It became one of those rooms that we rarely even walked through on the way to another part of the house.  We got rid of the majority of our furniture when we moved here and it’s just not part of our beach lifestyle to have any kind of formal living room set up.  Hmmmm….what the heck do I do with this lovely space which is full of gorgeous morning sunlight?

A beachy library!! Yes, I decided to make this unused space into a library.  In addition to fiction and non-fiction I have a nice collection of gardening, home improvement,  cookbooks and magazines which were piled here and there in every room of the house. There’s nothing like trying to find something when you want it and can’t remember where the heck it is.

The first step was to remove everything and then paint our old oak bookshelves in white.  A nice coat of primer and two coats of white did the trick!

Old oak bookcases

I gathered every book and magazine that we own and categorized them all…boy, was that fun :O)  It sure makes it easy to find what we’re looking for though.

Several rocking chairs provide seating as well as a large ottoman that I placed in front of the window for the girls (oops, I mean puppies).  As you can see from the photo below, Mini, made herself right at home.  She considers herself our guard dog so she perches herself in front of the window each morning.  She’s sitting on the Ralph Lauren pillowcase which I found for 50 cents at a local thrift store earlier this year!!  The navy and white pattern works perfectly in our color scheme of blues, greens and sandy hues.

David had this solid brass Captain’s Wheel hidden in a box from his Navy days, so I decided to use it as a bookend.

Baskets hold  CD cases, Coastal Living magazines plus a few favorite family photos and cherished treasures fill the remaining shelf areas.  All the bottles up on top were collected from our local beach then filled with seashells or sand with shells glued on top.

The blue and white striped pillow in the rocker is a pillowcase I made from an old flannel sheet.  I sewed in Velcro at the bottom of the pillowcase so it’s easy to remove and wash.   I finally found the perfect place on the wall for the Oyster Shell Wreath that I made last year.

This old table lamp has been in my family for about forty years and been a multitude of colors (and will probably be changed again soon!).  I bought it from my cousin for a few dollars and added a new shade purchased from Ross Stores.  Waterside Cottages is the ONLY book not in my bookshelves now as I “have” to read it over and over.

A Victorian Girl bookend is a cherished treasure as it was hand-painted by my grandmother in the 1970’s…the Victorian Boy that matches is on the other side of the bookcases.  David found the solid brass porthole window at an estate sale and it actually makes a great drink coaster!

Victorian Bookend

You may remember these A to Z Bookends that I found at a garage sale last year – I still LOVE them so much!

So…things I want to add or change would include adding a piece or two of decorative trim to the top and bottom of the bookshelves to make them look like one piece.  I have some white-slipcovered chairs and loveseat picked out from Ikea that would be my ultimate dream in this space. The carpet HAS to be ripped out and replaced with something else. We don’t know what to replace the carpet with…any ideas or suggestions?

White library bookshelves

Our kitty cat, Taffy, doesn’t seem to mind the brown carpet or non-Ikea furniture and makes herself right at home in this room each day.

Of course, you know that I love flowers so I try to keep something fresh in the library every day of the year.

Sally Lee by the Sea is moving

Welcome to our New Beach Cottage Design & Lifestyle Site

That’s right…we’ve moved! Not us literally, but our website has moved and we invite you to look around our new Beach Cottage Design & Lifestyle blog.

Why did we relocate? Well, many of you have experienced the recent “issues” with Blogger and these “issues” made our decision (which we’ve been pondering for a while) to relocate to WordPress a little easier.

We’ll be updating and adding new things to the site over the next few weeks so if there is a topic, category, design feature or something that you’d like to suggest please email us your ideas or thoughts.  Please excuse our mess while we try to clean up some of the formatting which didn’t integrate perfectly from the old site.

Thank you so much for your continuing love, support and inspiration.

A Pretty in Pink Beach Party

We’re in the mood for a beach party, how about you? You may be wondering why? Are ya, huh?

Well, our wonderful friend, Beverly, of How Sweet the Sound is celebrating the 3rd Birthday of her weekly blog party called Pink Saturday.  We are so happy for her that we decided to throw her a little virtual beach party to celebrate the occasion.

I’ve met so many wonderful blogging friends through Pink Saturday that it has become one of the highlights of every week.  Let’s party!

Every party has to have Balloons…
And we set up a bunch of tables on the beach for everyone….well, hopefully, it’s enough seating ….maybe!?!

I love sweet and simple centerpieces so these wire baskets with pink flowers will do nicely!

Pinwheels make any party festive especially when displayed in sand-filled mason jars, don’t you agree?

I made some Party favors too!

Since we’ll be partying until late in the evening, let’s hang up some festive beach lighting…

Can I offer you some pink lemonade?

…or maybe something else cool to drink?

I couldn’t decide between this seashell cake or pink petaled cupcakes, so how about both?
Pink sugar sticks & lollipops will look pretty on the tables…

    and pink popcorn too!

Oh heck, help yourself to anything at the Pink dessert buffet!

Oh, yes, I must show you my pink party dress! Too much? LOL!

And of course, new Pink shoes are in order too…

Don’t forget to take a party favor with you before you leave!

Happy Birthday to Pink Saturday!! Give Beverly a visit for more fun Pink Partying AND enter her giveaway too!
We’re taking the Memorial Day weekend off and
wish you all a truly delightful weekend!!

    Daydreaming of Hydrangeas

I love hydrangeas…do you? I am so blessed that our beach cottage garden has three mature plants…and they were here when we moved in. I’ve always enjoyed these divine flowers but never actually had them in my garden until now. They certainly seem to enjoy our shoreline location.

We have many drizzly days and that is always my favorite time to photograph these precious flowers…of course, it’s always in the morning while wearing my famous rain boots and PJ’s. LOL!

Here are a few of my photos from last October when the hydrangeas were just finishing up their season. It will be a while longer until this year’s blooms are ready to cut and enjoy so I’m daydreaming of hydrangeas on this lovely Spring day.  I hope you enjoy and have a fabulous day!

Anchor Cameo Necklace is Pure Nautical Delight

My Sweet November…where fabulous finds await you!

Jewelry artist and My Sweet November owner, Candy, creates cameo jewelry, modern and whimsical necklaces, earrings, and rings that are perfect for weddings, proms, and other special occasions or just everyday wear.

Candy selected a Navy Blue Anchor Nautical Cameo Necklace for us to review. Great choice! The blue looks superb with the necklace’s silver setting.

As someone who loves larger jewelry, I was immediately in love with this nautical jewelry piece. The necklace’s silver-plated Rococo setting adds lovely feminine detail to the cameo. The anchor is a soft white hue and is extremely beautiful against the navy blue background.

A navy blue cameo that showcases a lovely anchor in a cream color.

The necklace has a nice weight to it (not heavy but not too light) and feels very comfortable while wearing.  The fact that the necklace can be dressed up or down adds to its appeal.  I found that it looks adorable with either jeans and a t-shirt or a sundress with sandals.

The necklace features an oxidized silver plated Rococo setting, measuring 2 1/2″ long including bail. Each necklace comes with a sturdy silver plated cable chain in your choice of 16, 18, or 20 inches long.

At a retail price of $17.50 plus a very reasonable $2.00 shipping fee (in the U.S.) I highly recommend this Anchor Cameo Necklace. It would be a fabulous gift for yourself or a loved one!!
