Since we have always lived along the west coast, we honestly had never heard of Pumpkin Island Lighthouse; which is located in Maine. Of course, we just “had” to share it with you this week since Halloween is in a few days. This little island and lighthouse are simply charming and have just been added to our must visit list. Have you visited this area of the country?
The light was built in 1854 along with an attached 1.5 story, colonial-cape style keeper’s quarters, this site also hosts a brick oil house and a boathouse. In the nineteenth century, this area was heavily traveled by vessels carrying lumber as well as summer pleasure craft. An automatic beacon near Pumpkin Island continues today as an aid to navigation; however this site remains under private ownership and is closed to the public.
