Editor’s Picks! Dana’s 5 Favorite Coastal Rooms

Favorite Coastal Rooms

Welcome to our new series of beach home decorating articles!  We’ll be regularly sharing favorite coastal rooms from Sally Lee by the Sea’s editorial staff. This week our contributing editor, Dana Haddon of CereusArt.com, has found five beautiful ideas which would be lovely in any beach house (or wannabe beach home!).

I think that the room below featuring the Capiz shell chandelier, modern blue artwork, and glass-topped table with a driftwood base is my favorite — and as you know, I’m not much of a modern beach house kinda gal!  Which coastal interior design elements are your favorite?

Any HGTV addicts out there?  What do you guys think of the new show, Beachfront Bargain Hunt?! Synopsis of the episode:  “Chris and Holly have been searching Long Beach Peninsula for eight years in search of a permanent vacation home for them and their daughter Claire. Realtor Char Wolters will show them three potential properties along the 28 miles of uninterrupted beaches in Ocean Park, WA. Will they be able to find a property that surrounds them with ocean views, beach access, and natural beauty for their budget of $295,000?”  And, of course, they did find a beach front home!!

Create a Beautiful Master Bedroom

Traditional Bedroom by Irvine Interior Designers & Decorators Blackband Design

Is your Master Bedroom a getaway from the worries of the world like it should be?  Why not work on creating a beautiful Master Bedroom this year?!  The Master Bedroom is a very important part of your home, yet it doesn’t always get top priority.  This Bedroom should be a place to take a deep breath and relax.  Unfortunately, many bedrooms are cluttered and disorganized.  If your bed linens are mismatched and worn, your dresser drawers are overstuffed and you’ve got piles of “stuff” on the floor then it’s time to make your Master Bedroom more of a priority.  Seriously… you’ll sleep easier in a serene resting place.

Here are a few ideas for creating your beautiful Master Bedroom…and some of the ideas don’t have a thing to do with decorating!

  • Your bed is the focal point of the room. Dress it up and make it every morning!
  • When accessorizing your dresser, stick with the basic “three” rule. Use only three items to decorate with, but keep them in scale with the furniture.
  • Whether you do long drapes or just a valance select fabrics which go well with your bedding.
  • Don’t let clutter gather
  • Don’t do chores in your bedroom. No ironing, No piles, No folding clothes, NO PROJECTS.
  • Make your room smell wonderful with air mists, candles, or fragrance plug-ins.

“Shades of blue and white in the master bedroom create a calming escape. Mismatched bedding and stacks of pillows in different sizes and patterns work together because of their matching hues. Wall-mountlamps on both sides of the bed provide task lighting so one person can read while the other sleeps. Next to the bed, an antique table makes a charming nightstand and stores bedtime essentials.” – Better Homes & Gardens Magazine

“In this beach house’s master bedroom the bed, dressed with a linen Pandora de Balthazar coverlet and shams, and the matching nightstands are by Seabrook Classics.” – Country Living Magazine

“The whole idea is to keep things as simple as possible; I like everything pared down to its purest form. “I used a combination of different shades of Farrow & Ball white paints—there are several whites on the walls.” – Meg Ryan’s design philosophy

“Accents, this is where you tie it all together, and complete your look. The accents in a room often make or break the look and  should be chosen with care. First, make a list of everything you need. Some  purchases to think about are:

  • Curtains and blinds
  • Bedding – duvets, comforters, throw blankets, pillowcases, etc.
  • Decorative pillows
  • Wall hangings and picture frames
  • An area rug for chilly wood floors
  • Mirrors – a stand-up mirror for a full-length view is optimal if you have  the space.
  • Shopping for your accents is where you can truly bring the elements and  theme of your room together.” – Homemade by Jaci

“The addition of a third window ensures that no part of the world outside is left unseen. This updated bedroom is also a great example of what a large-scale print can do for a space.” – Coastal Living Magazine

“Wrap a bedroom in quintessential cottage character with a painted paneled wood treatment. Instead of the expected beaded board, run a strip of 1-inch-thick molding from floor to ceiling between a room’s crown molding and baseboard, leaving a foot between each piece of trim. Paint the walls and trim the same color to achieve an-always-been-there look.” – Better Homes and Gardens

“In a New York modernist beach house decorated by Christina Murphy, the master bedroom’s knockout punch is a dramatically over-scale headboard covered in Raoul Textiles’ Exoticus Elephant Leaf.” – House Beautiful

baskets for organization in kitchen

Organize with Baskets in 2014!

Organize with baskets this year! If you’re like most folks, with the New Year you’re tossing out the old to make room for the new.  Along with donating items to the Goodwill my husband and I are organizing what we’ve decided to keep.  Baskets are my favorite way to keep things neat and tidy.  Here are some great ideas to organize with baskets.

baskets for organization in kitchen

I really love the chalkboard tags on these baskets in the kitchen.  And aren’t the palm leaf prints lovely?

Numbered basket in living room design

What a perfect way to store magazines, books, and a blanket in your living room.  I’d probably paint our family initial on it.

Wire baskets for bathroom organization

Re-purposed wire baskets give this bathroom a coastal cottage feel.

Basket storage in kids room

Here, baskets are used to keep a child’s playroom neat and organized.  These baskets are made from banana fiber!

Do you use baskets for storage and organization?

Caribbean Beach Villa interiors

Modern Beach House Tour: Caribbean Style

Amsterdam’s architectural firm, Piet Boon has created a beautiful Caribbean Beach Villa interior design. The villa features a distinct personality and attention to detail.   Piet Boon Architecture comprises an expert team of architects led by Piet Boon and Chief Design Officer Roland Kokkeler and beach villas are one of their specialties.

Selecting sustainable materials was important when designing the interior of the Caribbean Beach Villa. “As the house has an open structure, the materials used had to be able to withstand the salty air but also age beautifully. Living spaces like the open kitchen are placed on the top floor in order to get the best breathtaking sea view. The accents in the natural color palette are derived from the cacti and aloe vera in the living spaces and outdoor. Local materials, characteristic for the island of Bonaire, Netherlands, are used for walls and floors. Lying in the gazebo gives you the illusion of floating on the clear water. As the panoramic seascape is beautiful, we arranged the outdoor furniture so it could be enjoyed in all its glory late into the evening.”  Enjoy the tour!
