A Touch of Autumn Decor

{Beach Cottage Decor} A Delicate Touch of Autumn is in the Air

Foggy days, crisp evenings, dewy mornings and changing leaves of crimson and gold are beginning to be a daily occurrence along the seashore.  A delicate touch of autumn is in the air…

A Touch of Autumn at the Beach

The hot chocolate came out of the pantry this week; which means Autumn decorating is around the corner. Nature and all of its glory are our favorite items to decorate with, so we searched for inspiration and found these wonderful ideas…

Better Homes & Gardens created a garland of Autumn finds. By knotting clusters of fresh leaves and mini pumpkins onto a length of twine they created an instant window swag which we have put on our must-try Autumn decorating list.  You?

We used Hydrangea leaves as candle and glass coasters all summer long so why not use Fall leaves?  Place your favorite Autumn scented candles in clear jars or candle holders and set them atop real leaves. Silk leaves from the craft store work well too!

The muted tones of off-white, ivory and gray are combined with pops of color from the corn and leaves in this chic display.  This country cottage decor is Autumn-chic yet light and bright which is perfect for the beach cottage style.

A Touch of Autumn Decor

It’s not always necessary to add traditional “Autumn” decor to your cottage.  The below vignette offers the colors of leaves in Fall yet is elegant, cottage chic and there isn’t a stereotypical “Autumn” decoration in site.

A wood tray is filled with seashells, rocks, a rusty star and wire basket which all provide beautiful Autumn hues and textures. How delightful! This is exactly the way we love to decorate during Autumn.

My Simple Autumn Arrangement for the Beach House

My Beach House Decorating for Autumn 2012

My Simple Autumn Arrangement for the Beach House — Keeping it simple is what it’s all about at the beach!  I popped over to JoAnn Fabric & Craft Store last week and picked up a few bags of faux gourds, some white pumpkins and moss which were all at 50% off.  My china cabinet stores some white bowls which I love, yet rarely use,  so those are what I decided to use.

Each bowl was filled with some gourds, favorite shells and/or starfish and then I used moss (which smells great and adds a very nice natural element to the arrangement) to fill in.  Some faux leaves we’re also used here and there…normally I would use real ones but the weather has been mighty strange this year so we are still having summer weather in October.

Simple – Beautiful – Beach House Style

Some of my favorite Ikea tealight lanterns and fake leaves tossed about onto my drop cloth tablecloth keep everything simple.

I found two faux white pumpkins (that was all they had in the entire store) so I bought them!  I really “beachified” one of them (look for those photos tomorrow) and the one pictured below was kept simple.  Some tacky glue and rhinestones were all I used.  The rhinestones pick up the sunlight through the window and when we use candles at night.

Give Your Thanksgiving Table Some Coastal Style!

Fall & Thanksgiving Dining Room ~ Hope you like our creation!

We had so much fun rearranging our dining room furniture and creating new vignettes of beach art on our walls – hope that we can give you a little inspiration for your coastal fall dinner parties too.

I created this Fall-Thanksgiving tablescape as an excuse to show off some of our coastal home decor at Caron’s Beach House, but it quickly became a labor of love as I found all kinds of treasures in our home that I could mix and match to create an aqua blue, light green and white color palette that compliments our small space. Perfect timing too – we had guests come for the weekend for the Ducks-Stanford game! (we don’t discuss the score….)

Poor Tom, he had to put up with eating at the kitchen bar for a few days as I made a total mess (creative minds sometimes are messy)  in the dining room. I really need to think about making up an award for “Best Boyfriend”… he would win every day!

I chose to stick with these three shades found in nature, because of where we live in Northern California, and because we already have these colors in our every day dinnerware.

It’s easy to find a plethora of green and blue tints in our natural greenery, but not so much “traditional”  fall color.  All of the greenery was found out on a walk in front of our house – you can do the same thing by just looking around your own backyard!

Mixed in some of my found large blue mussel shells, Tomales Bay oyster shells, green sea urchins, bleached moon snail shells and sand dollars, a few white starfish and golden periwinkles. I also added driftwood pieces to reinforce the “beach” feel and natural color palette.  (goodness knows I have enough pieces collected on our deck!) The yellow-white little pumpkins are courtesy from Trader Joe’s;  my go-to for fresh seasonal flowers and greenery.

And of course, my special Half Moon Bay blown glass pumpkin from last year!

Love my Jonathan Adler Sailor and Mermaid salt and pepper shakers! Great gift from my daughter, Allison.

Our guests oohed and ahhed and then feasted on one of Tom’s fabulous steak creations, fresh green beans with Chantrelle mushrooms that we picked up at the Ferry Building, vanilla sea salt heirloom tomatoes, and roasted baby red potatoes.  Served with Joel and Tracy’s gift of  Hawley’s Zin from the Dry Creek Valley.  Perfect way to host a fall dinner party!

A Coastal Dinner Party in Autumn

There are times when I really am homesick for my “brick and mortar” store.  I miss our quaint Norwegian fishing village, I miss my fellow merchants… mostly I miss my customers; I miss their stories, and being part of their celebrations and redecorating projects.  During the five years that we were open in Poulsbo, I was so lucky to have met so many wonderful customers, many that actually became my friend.  Sonia is one of those special people.

Last weekend, I had a few minutes to catch up on my personal Facebook page, and Sonia had posted these beautiful pictures of her dining room table for a special Sunday night dinner party.  Of course they caught my eye right away – original and fun fresh design!  They were planning dinner for eight, and she was incredibly gracious to send me the photos and her menu.  Gosh, I hope we get invited sometime!

Sonia’s Tablescape Ideas…

“For the tablescape, I collected curly willow branches, maple leaves, moss and cedar branches from the woods near our home. Then added white pumpkins, candles, and colorful fall gourds. To add a little coastal flair, I also added antique glass, aqua fishing floats and starfish!”

For us Pacific Northwesterners (not sure that was a word?), this is a perfect example of using nature’s bounty; cedar, moss (goodness knows that we definitely have enough moss!) and curly willow branches from our backyard to create something that is so special!  Love the pretty aqua blue vintage fishing floats, adding that extra special panache.

A Peek Inside My Beach Cottage

My beach cottage mantel for Autumn

The chippy old mantel is gracefully draped with Autumn leaves; a grapevine starfish wreath, white bedazzled pumpkin and sailor’s knot which provide a nautically-inspired simplistic design.  The finished decor is a bit busier than Autumn decorations of past, but it suites where life is at right now. Every nautical display needs a boat, right?!  We had to include David’s old boat as a finishing touch.

My dropcloth table cloth is layered with a burgundy runner and crossed with burlap ribbon. The centerpiece is a well-used Autumn candleholder display which has been adorned delicately with seashells from our Gulf Coast trip and seashell stamped tags.  Sometimes we use a candle and sometimes we just place shells on top of the holders…depends on the mood or occasion.  It’s all about keeping it simple around here.

Side Table with a Seaside Theme for Autumn

A cherished seashell wreath from my mother is being used as a large candleholder this season.  Autumn leaves and flowers (unfortunately not real) were tucked in here and there to softly represent the season.  A pumpkin spice candle completes the picture!
